Baby Bean’s first photo

It has been 4 weeks since Valerie gave me the good news. Yesterday, we got our first look an our new little addition, who I have affectionately nicknamed ‘Baby Bean’ for now. Seeing that little heart flicker was just as magical as it was when we first saw it with Jacob.

Valerie is about 8 weeks along right now and we are taking things one day at a time. She seems to be more nauseous than she was with Jacob. She’ll have some cravings. Nothing crazy. Pepperoni pizza here, chips and salsa there. More than cravings, it seems to be “everything except this one food that I want right now makes me feel sick.” I am just rolling with it. Tonight, she could not think of what she wanted for dinner until pretty late and sent me out to Carson for some carnitas from Diana’s. I had forgotten about some of the food runs from Jacob. It’s all part of the fun.

Jacob is going to make a fantastic big brother. He loves seeing babies so hopefully he loves our new little one. He has such a kind heart and we can only hope that he welcomes being a big brother and having Team Bonilla going from a roster of three to four.

We have not told anyone yet. Not even our families. We wanted to wait until after the first doctor appointment, which was yesterday. As things happen, we are reminded by the familiarity of it all and are feeling blessed beyond belief.

Lord, please watch over our little Baby Bean. Grow grow grow.

Happy 2nd birthday to our little man

Team Bonilla at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Everyone says that you should enjoy every moment with your children because the time passes so fast. It’s tough to believe that it was two years ago today that Valerie and I were in the hospital awaiting Jacob’s arrival. We knew our lives would change. What I did not realize was how much.

Fast forward to two years later and I can’t imagine our lives without this little two year old toddler. How did we get along before without his smiles and laughs? How did we just observe common every day things without seeing it through the wonder in his eyes. Things like music, animals, trees, the moon. They are all just so magical to him.

Since today was so very special and we love seeing the world through his eyes, we decided to take him on a little birthday trip.

He woke up in San Diego. We went to breakfast in the Mission Beach area. From there, the Bonilla family headed to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido where Jacob had an amazing full day filled with running and seeing all kinds of animals. We even booked a private tour … which he fell asleep halfway through. It was nap time after all. Then, after waking up, it was more running and even more animals. Lions and tigers and bears — oh my! Ok, there were no bears and the lions were off exhibit for some reason. However, there were tigers. Once we returned to our resort, we walked along the beach and then headed back to our room to relax before going downstairs to eat dinner. They even gave him his own little ice cream with a candle in it.

Grandma, grandpa and even auntie Linda called to sing happy birthday to him. Auntie Erica, uncle Eddie and his cousins called to wish him a happy birthday and show him, via FaceTime, the card that they had made for him. It was a long and busy day for our little guy that ended with mommy telling him the story of the day he was born as he fell asleep for the night.

And now Valerie and I have time to reflect on what a wild and fun filled time the past two years have been. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.

22-month old little man

jacob-22-months

He’s closing in on two years. He is getting there fast. The time is flying by and we are trying to treasure every little moment we can. One of the things that I love is that all he wants to do is be with us. Both of us. He just loves spending time with us. When one of us is not there, he asks for that person. He just seems so happy and content when the three of us are together.

Yesterday was his 22-month birthday. Today, we took him to the Aquarium of the Pacific for the second time and he had so much fun. He had fun seeing all of the sea life, including the sea lions which he was convinced were big dogs that — I suppose — really loved to swim. He also had a blast playing in the water areas and getting wet.

Happy birthday to our little man who, before we know it, won’t be so little anymore.

A rough week for our little man

jacob-cooking
Jacob’s Kitchen coming soon to the Food Network

I’m not sure who the beginning of the week was harder on. Jacob? Mom? Dad? Earlier this week Jacob fell and broke a tooth. He’s fine now, but getting there was an emotional ordeal for mom and dad. He had to go to the dentist for the first time. Before this, his pediatrician was doubling as his dentist. Let’s just say that Jacob was not a fan of the visit.

Sure he liked all of the toys at the dentist. What he didn’t like was mom holding him down and the dentist sticking things in his mouth to repair the tooth. Luckily it is a baby tooth and will fall out one day, but the dentist still did a fantastic job. If you don’t know what to look for, you would not know anything happened.

But for mom and dad, it was very tough emotionally. Jacob didn’t understand what was going on and all that he wanted was for it to stop.

It’s tough watching your child go through something like that, even if he is back to himself an hour later. All you want if to make your child feel like they are safe. To make sure that they are happy and healthy. Hearing him say “all done” while the procedure was taking place was heartbreaking.

He is fine now and we are happy that the dentist did such a good job. Things like this make you second guess a lot of things and make you want to work even harder to be even better parents. Jacob means the world to us.

Love you mommy and daddy

Jacob has started saying “love you mommy” and “love you daddy” which just melts my heart. Especially the first time I heard it. Then when he couples it with a hug, it is tough to fight off the tears of joy.

He is growing so fast and learning so much. He seems so smart. When we look at videos of him when he was younger — during a time when he couldn’t even sit up yet — it is tough to believe that we have come so far in such a short amount of time.

Rough 2015 for Team Bonilla so far

levis-01

We haven’t written anything here in a while. It’s been a rough year for us so far. At least one of the three of us have been sick every day since before Christmas. First it was Jacob, then me, then Val, then Jacob, then me, then Val. I am sensing a pattern. We have collectively battled colds, the flu, strep throat, and ear and eye infections. 2015 has not been kind to us.

However, while Team Bonilla is not at 100%, we are getting there. The best way to get better is to get some rest. Of course, that is rarely possible with a rambunctious (but good) toddler in the house who wonders why mommy and daddy can no longer keep up with him.

We are looking forward to being back to our normal selves and plan to start this year fresh once that happens.

levis-02

levis-03

Jacob had a great Christmas. He also went to his first football game, the 49ers’ finale in Santa Clara. We are amazed at how fast he is learning. He knows and recognized the alphabet, can say so much now, can count to ten, can get through the letter F on his own, and so much more.

Chalupa, our desert tortoise, has also emerged from her hibernation and no one was more excited than Jacob. He immediately ran outside to feed her flowers. He likes her so much.

One of his favorite things to play with? A bowl. Any bowl really, but preferably one of his brightly colored food bowls. He just loves bowls.

He is growing up so fast and surprises us each day. Once we are all 100% well, we plan to make sure that Jacob returns to spending some quality time in the great outdoors and not be forced to stay inside all of the time.

Even though it has been a rough 2015, Val has been just as amazing as always. She is the strength of this family and both Jacob and I are so very lucky to have her in our lives.

Proud of my little man

jacob-hair

It is no secret that, for me, taking Jacob to school/daycare is extremely tough. In recent months, I can probably count on one hand the number of times that it has gone smoothly — and I would have some fingers left over. Usually the fiasco involves lots of tears, some screaming, some refusing to let go of me, etc. It’s tough on me because I just want him to be happy. It made me question our current setup and if we were doing what was best for our son.

In my heart, I know that the interaction that he has with other kids will greatly benefit him in the future rather than just staying home with mom, dad or other family members. And I know that the tears end within minutes and he has a lot of fun with is friends and teachers. However, seeing those tears when you are about to leave him was gut-wrenching.

Today was different. I remembered an article that Valerie had sent me stating that the worst thing that you can do is try to sneak out. It only makes it worse and makes them want to keep an eye on you more to make sure you don’t do just that. So today, I did what the article said to do.

After putting away his stuff and playing a little with him and his friends (which I normally do), I turned him around to face me and looked him in the eyes. He knew what was going to happen and started to wine a little. I gave him a kiss and lovingly said, “Jacob, I am going to go now, but I will be back for you soon. I love you so much and you are going to have lots of fun today with your friends and your teachers, ok? Now go with your teacher and have fun.” I gave him another kiss on the head and his teacher said “Come on Jacob.” He looked at me, smiled and said “Bye bye da-da.” Then he grabbed his teacher’s hand and walked over with her to the rest of the group.

My heart was filled with joy and it made my day.

A mixture of sad and comforting

Jacob is going through a clingy phase right now. Lately, whenever we drop him off at daycare, he cries and cries and doesn’t want us to leave him. Even when he is eating his dinner, if he walks away, he starts to panic.

I talked to his friend’s mom today after dropping him off and it would appear that he is not alone. His friend is going through the same thing and it is a recent development. They both have fun while they are at daycare, it is just that initial separation that is hard for them.

While that made me feel a little better, it still makes me sad to drop him off knowing that all he wants is to stay with me. However, I must say that, even though it breaks my heart, today’s instance of cling comforted me to some extent.

Jacob would only stop crying when he had his arms wrapped around me, holding on tight, and resting his head on me. There was something comforting about the way he was holding onto me, hugging me with all of his strength and seeing his little face in the nearby mirror as he rested on me.

I love that little guys so much and while I wish he would get used to us dropping him off, I am going to soak in the small positive of the whole experience.

Milestone: One and a half

jacob-backyard

Today is a very special day for our little man. Just 18 months ago — plus 9 months or so — he officially joined our little family. Back then, we could not even fathom the amount of joy he would bring into our lives.

Sure there are late night interruptions, chasing after him as he runs around Kohl’s like he just won a shopping spree, messy dinners when more food hits the floor than his mouth, and the high costs of extra food and snacks for the little guy. It is all still very much worth it. Jacob loves us. He loves spending time and we love spending time with him.

We have our good days and our bad. Valerie is an amazing mommy. She is like a super mom. I have no idea how she does it. Jacob is lucky to have a mother like her and I am lucky to have her as my wife and friend.

What is Jacob up to these days? He is working on more teeth. He loves to dance. He loves to run and have us chase him. He loves looking for our tortoise, Chalupa, in the backyard. I’m not sure how we are going to get him to understand that he will not see her again until February because she is hibernating. He loves picking flowers and then taking them over to her so she can have something yummy. I’m not going to lie, I kind of enjoy watching some Disney Junior cartoons with him. He likes singing to the radio in the car. He loves loves loves the moon. And yes, he still loves toes. They may be his favorite thing in the world.

Jacob is always full of surprises. Every morning, I love seeing his little face. And every night, I love kissing him goodnight.

Halloween 2014

Jacob decided to pay tribute to those that drive the giant red trucks and make the “woo woo woo” sound that he loves so much. This year, Jacob was a fire fighter for Halloween. The day started with a costume parade at school with his friends.

DSC_0629 DSC_0655

Then Jacob headed over to mommy’s work to visit with her coworkers and see the giant pile of candy in her office.

DSC_0664

Then once the sun went down, it was time to head from house to house to beg neighbors for candy … which would be donated to mom and dad because … well … he is one and a half. And dad said so.

Jacob vacations in Palm Springs

Jacob enjoyed some time away from the busy stress of day care last week. He needed some time away. Some time to relax and reflect. So he took off on vacation to Palm Springs. Oh, and being the great son that he is, he took his parents and grandparents with him. What a great kid.

One of the highlights of his trip was a visit to the Children’s Discovery Museum just outside Palm Springs where he ran around, played, and learned.

First Dodgers game

IMG_4695

Jacob had another milestone this past weekend. On Saturday, he attended his very first Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium with mom, dad, and grandma and grandpa Gonzales.

The second we pulled him out of the car, he looked around with a “what the heck is this place?” look on his face. As we walked toward and into the stadium, he was fascinated by everything around him.

However, his favorite part had to be the food. His first trip to Dodger Stadium including his first taste of a legendary Los Angeles delicacy — a Dodger dog. Maybe not the greatest hot dog in the world, but you pair it with the history and experience that is Dodger Stadium, and it sure is tough to beat.

Other tasty delights on the menu for Jacob included a pretzel, which he shared with dad and a chocolate malt, which he shared with mom. The malt was probably his favorite. He is his mother’s child.

He was really good and well behaved during the game. Other than getting a little scared when the crowd erupted in cheers after big plays, he enjoyed taking in everything around him and relaxing at the ballpark. And there were bubbles floating through the air after big plays. He loves bubbles and spotted them faster than we did. He enjoyed walking up and down the isle stairs, making smiles at one of the women near us, making dad chase him through the concourse, and he lasted a lot longer than we thought he would. By the end of the seventh inning, he was looking tired so we left. He was fast asleep by the time we hit the 110.

All in all, it was a great experience. Not only for him, but mom and dad. Thanks to grandma and grandpa Gonzales for tagging along.

By the way, the Dodgers are 1-0 in games where Jacob was in attendance. Just sayin’.

Toddler says what?

As Jacob grows up, it is so much fun watching him learn new things. He has been talking for a while now. Most of what he says, we understand what he means. He is saying words — that kind of sound like the words that he means — or close enough to them. He has been doing this for a while now. Of course there is “Ma ma” and “Da da” there. And there is only one full word that he says regularly … which is actually in spanish. Go figure. Anyways, here is a list of the vocabulary of Jacob.

Ma Ma – Mommy.

Da Da – Daddy. Also said for anything he is not sure what to call it.

Moo – This can mean either moon or milk. He uses it for both.

Bah – Ball, bye, and … wait for it … grandpa. Grandpa Gonzales that is.

Tah – Stars. Said with a whisper.

TAAAAH – Toes. Said louder and with more excitement.

Ta Ta – Turtle. Usually said while staring outside the window looking for our pet Tortoise, Chalupa.

Uh Ooooh – Means exactly what it sounds like.

Nyuh Nyuh – Dillon. His big cousin.

Wah Wah – Water. However, he has started saying “agua” as well.

Daaah – Done.

Nah Nah – Banana.

Also want to note that when we say any of the following, he points to the correct body part: Nose, mouth, head, ears, eyes, toes, belly button

He also knows sign language for “more.” Usually referring to food.

We love watching him learn new things and new words/sounds. Also, he got his second haircut this week since it has been so hot and he has been a little sick. We figured this was a good time for it since it would help cool him off.

Our 16 month old little man

jacob-16months

Jacob turned 16 months old today. Not a milestone or anything, but to us it is still remarkable to see how quickly he is growing. It seems like it was just yesterday that he was stumbling after taking his first steps. Now, we are having a hard time keeping up with him. And he is smart. Sometime we can’t believe how smart he is. From problem solving to trying to manipulate mom and dad with fake cries. Still, we love each and every day with him and we treasure each moment. Jacob has enriched our lives so much. It’s amazing how much joy he has brought to us and our family.

He spent the day at the Lomita Fair, a celebration in a neighboring town. As always, he took everything in with the same sense of wonder and curiosity that we have come to love.

Happy 16 month birthday little man. I can’t wait to see what the rest of 2014 brings you.

Big changes for Team Bonilla

IMG_0135.JPG

The time is finally here. Team Bonilla is on the move. Today, we will move to our new home. It is bittersweet because our old home is where we had been for years. It was Jacob’s first home. I still remember bringing him home for the first time. It is where he took his first steps. He loves his home.

As for the new home, it is bigger and Jacob should love it. It is just half a block away from a great park and walking distance from a few restaurants and small businesses.

The transition has not been easy. Moving rarely is easy. There was some work that needed to be done in order to make sure that it was comfortable for our family. Then there is the packing and actual moving. But we know that once everything is done, it will be worth it.

Looking at our old home being empty will be tough. But we know that this new chapter in our lives will be worth it.

Baby’s first tantrum

20140814-081100-29460459.jpg

Everyone loves baby firsts, right? That first smile, the first time they sit up, the first words, the first time the crawl, first steps, the first time they walk on their own. Firsts are wonderful! Well, most of them are.

There is also baby’s first tantrum — and Jacob has had his.

Shortly after we stopped his favorite songs and cartoons on the iPad because it was time to eat dinner, he started refusing food and getting very fussy. It got worse and worse. Eventually, he was squirming and kicking. Crying and screaming at the top of his lungs. Val, being the loving and concerned mother that she is, was very worried and thought that something may be hurting him.

We ran the shower because he loves bath time and we thought that might soothe him. Nope. Finally, it was getting so bad that Val was ready to take him to urgent care because she thought he was in some kind of massive pain.

Then we remembered his cousins around that age and thought, “uh oh.” Could this be a tantrum from turning off his songs? Before we rushed to find a medical explanation, I decided to test this theory.

I took screaming Jacob back to the iPad and started playing the songs again. He immediately stopped and was calm again.

It was indeed a tantrum. Not all firsts are fun.

We have a walker! Jacob is on the move!

And to think that we were excited that he was walking up to 12 steps before falling down. We are in some real trouble now! Our little man is more mobile and has learned more about a little thing called balance. It started today. When I arrived to pick him up at daycare this afternoon, his teachers told me that he was walking all over the place today. It was all of a sudden, like he just decided, “You know what? I am going to start walking today.” Then he proceeded to chase me all around the daycare room. He was making turns and everything. It was one of the most amazing and rewarding things that I had every seen. I was so shocked and so happy.

We know that this will make things a lot tougher from now on. Now that he has discovered how to get around better, he will just be looking for trouble. However, it is still a great thing to see.

Watching him walk makes me both happy and sad. Happy that he is growing up and learning. Sad that he is growing up so fast. Love this little guy. After watching his friends at school walk for a while, he is very happy and excited to join them. You can tell from his face as he walks.

Below is a video of Jacob excited to show off his walking ability at grandma and grandpa’s house.

Baby steps: The movie!

Adding to Valerie’s post from yesterday, here is a short video clip of Jacob trying to walk in his room. He is getting braver and braver as confidence in his little legs and feet grow.

Clingy Jacob

jacob-valerie-2014-06

Jacob has entered his really clingy phase. He always wants to be with us, in our arms, or just next to us. Dropping him off at day care leaves him in tears once he realizes that we are not staying there with him. Sometimes, he will grab onto my pants and hold on for dear life once he realizes that daddy is off to work. He doesn’t seem to have any issues once we are gone, it’s just the leaving portion that is the issue.

On the plus side, he has become very cuddly at times. It is absolutely adorable to be holding him and feel his arms wrapping around you or holding on while he rests his head on you.

Working on standing

Jacob is super mobile now, crawling faster than we can sometimes keep up with. He is good at getting himself up on his own and has even stood on his own for 5 seconds or so before falling on his butt and laughing like crazy because he finds it so hilarious to fall. Something tells me that is going to be bad later. LOL.

He has no problems walking around with a little help and most of the kids in his class are walking, so hopefully he will follow soon.

Time for another haircut?

His hard has grown fast. It already looks like it needs another trim. It was not that long ago that he god his first haircut. However, we are unsure if we are going to let it grow out or buzz it again. Shorter may be better for summer.

Future drummer?

One of Jacob’s favorite toys now is a little toy drum that came with drum sticks. He loves going to town, making his special brand of music. And don’t get me started on the big spoons and pots in the kitchen.

The Bonilla men on Father’s Day

Jacob has discovered his monitor

jacob-monitor

No, this is not a scene from The Blair Witch Project. This is what we have woken up to the last two days (today before 6 AM!). It was bound to happen. Jacob has finally discovered the mysterious object mounted to the corner of his crib. Yes, he has found his baby monitor. And now that he is able to get up on his knees on his own, he has no problem reaching for it. I mean, it must be pretty cool, right? It has a little camera lens, a swivel, and A LIGHT!

Maybe he is just trying to move it so he can finally get some privacy.

We get to witness the little things

jacob-jumper-playing

Family and friends get to see Jacob all of the time. However, no one spends as much time with him as Valerie and I.

A lot of people have seen him army crawl, clap, give kisses, wave goodbye, and do his little ninja stance and battle cry (I have no idea how else to describe that). But only Valerie and I get to witness everything. Like when he first wakes up in the morning and is calling for us. Then when he is so happy to see us once we go get him. Or the Superman stretch that he does when we change his morning diaper. One time when I picked him up from day care and he was siting at the table with his little friends, he was so excited to see me that he bounced up and down, shaking the table and all of the other kids on it (their chairs are part of the table itself).

I know the names of his friends at school and will often sit there to play with some of them when I pick him up. I know how to get a quick smile out of him after I have picked him up by lifting him up into the air and saying, “It’s Jacob! King of the Bonillas!”

We know that he likes sucking on pickles. We know that his favorite toy, oddly, is just a purple cylinder that is actually part of a bigger toy. It does nothing. It is just a shape to be placed within the other toy. But he loves it and it is his go-to toy. I just wish it were not round so it would not roll away all of the time. We know that he loves splashing water during bath time. We know his favorite song. Oddly, it is the theme song to a television show that has been off the air for years and we really aren’t sure what he likes about it.

We know that he likes watching birds. We know that his excitement level goes off the scale when he thinks that one of us is going to playfully “get him.”

These and many other things that most people don’t get to witness are just a few of the characteristics that make him Jacob. And we get to see them all. Every day we treasure watching our son as his personality quickly evolves. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Happy first birthday Jacob

Jacob at the LA Zoo on May 6, 2014

One year ago, our family grew from two to three. It had actually happened about nine months prior to that, but it was a year ago that it became official. At 9:30 PM on May 6, 2014, a 6 pound, 7 ounce bundle of joy joined our little family. At that point, Valerie and I fell in love all over again. However, this time, it was with our new son, Jacob David Bonilla.

Since then, there have been fun days, tough days, and days where we felt that we were going to go crazy. Through it all, our love for him has never faltered.

When he wakes up in the morning, one of us is the first person that he sees in the morning and we are greeted with smiles and laughter. When he goes to bed at night, one of us is the last person that he sees as he slowly falls asleep in the comfort of one of our arms. In between those two moments, he continues to remind us that he is the best decision that we have ever made.

We can see the love in his little face when he sees us. He is always so happy to be with us. While we can’t spend every minute of every day with him, we try to spend as much time as possible with Jacob and treasure each and every one of those special moments together.

jacob-zoo-2014-2

Jacob at the LA Zoo on May 6, 2014

On Saturday, we celebrated with friends and family. Today, to celebrated his first year out in the world with a trip to the Los Angeles Zoo. Watching him see certain animals for the first time and seeing the wonder in his eyes reminds us how to view the beauty in the world as if we were seeing things for the first time as well. Jacob teaches us how to enjoy even the simple things in life. For dinner, we joined grandma and grandpa Bonilla, who could not let his birthday pass without seeing him. He has so many people in his life that love him. We are so thankful for those that have been a part of Jacob’s life.

Valerie and I are still learning how to be good parents. We can only hope that we are going a good job so far. Jacob is the most important part of our lives and we love him so much.

First birthday party

bday-1-1

bday-1-2

bday-1-3

Jacob had his first birthday party today (his actual birthday is on Tuesday). We are truly blessed to have so many friends and family in our lives that were willing to come out on a very warm May afternoon to help us celebrate our little man’s first year out in the world. It has been a year of discovery for both Jacob and his parents. Jacob attacks each day with a strong sense of curiosity and wonder while mom and dad continue to learn what it means to be good parents. Seeing the world through Jacob’s eyes has helped us to appreciate even the small things in life.

We reflect back at Jacob’s first days with us and can’t believe how far the three of us have come. Things have changed in the past year, but the love in our hearts for Jacob remains as strong as ever. We see the love that he has for us and feel that we are two of the luckiest parents in the world to have such a great little man in our lives.

We smile at our memories of you growing up over the past year and can’t wait to make new memories in the years ahead. Today, we celebrated your birthday, but nearly a year ago, we gave us the greatest gift of all.

Silent cries at the doctor’s office

It always breaks your heart to see your child crying. Jacob was overdue for his blood work and needed to have his blood drawn today at his pediatrician’s office. It was done so late because the last time he went in, he was sick and they could not do it.

He sat on my lap and stared out the second floor window at the leaves on a tree outside rustling in the wind. The nurse straightened his arm and got it ready for the needle. He was somewhat curious, but easily distracted by the nature and sunshine outside, not noticing that I was holding his other arm down. Then the needle went in and he could not be bothered with what was going on outside the window. He stared as his blood exited his body. I was so proud that he was not freaking out.

Well, he didn’t freak out but I did notice his head go down. I leaned over to look at him and he was indeed crying. His eyes were closed and tears were forming. His mouth was open as if he were screaming cries, but no sound was coming out. Then moments later, the sounds of cries exited his mouth. However, by then, the nurse was nearly done.

They pulled the needle out, put on a bandage, and then Jacob quickly cuddled up and grabbed onto me and he cried a little more. I offered him a Mum Mum as a treat and he reluctantly took it and then started eating it. After a few seconds eating his tasty treat, he was fine and back to his curious self.

What a brave little guy.

Mommy making him smile

Jacob officially hit 11 months old today. He spent the day at church, having lunch with mommy and daddy at Hof’s Hut, running around town with mommy and daddy, playing, and then Sunday dinner with family. He is slowly becoming more mobile (better late than never). His sense of wonder about his surroundings continues to grow. There are times when he prefers to be near us and in our arms and there are times when he is perfectly content just playing on his own … whether that be with his toys or with something like his foot.

He continues to make us laugh at the little things that he does. We enjoy seeing the world through his eyes, where everything is new and wondrous.

People can’t believe how old he is when we tell them. They say that he is so small. But he will grow at whatever rate he wants and be just as great as anyone else.

His 1st birthday quickly approaches and we still can’t believe how quickly time has passed. It seems like just a short time ago, I was staring at him for the first time while in the hospital. Every day, we see more and more of ourselves in him, yet he has his own distinct personality as well. He is such a big part of our lives. We almost forget what it was like not having him around.

And the best part of the whole experience is that we can tell that he loves us back. He is our little man and there isn’t anything that we would not do for him.

Kiss goodbye

Jacob and Alexa playing together on Monday morning

I was given a little surprise when I dropped Jacob off at day care this morning. As he was playing with his friend Alexa, who was the only other baby there already, and I started to get up off the ground next to him and leave, he turned to me, grabbed my head to bring it closer and gave me a big wet kiss on the cheek and then turned and continued to play. He has been making kissing sounds all month when we give him kisses, but this was the first time (for me at least) that he intentionally tried to give me a kiss.

It was great and very heartwarming. Then as I headed out the door, he turned and waved goodbye.
